Teens know it, parents should: Summer is time to try drugs and alcohol

By Jim Ribble, CNN

(CNN) – In June and July teens are more likely to use drugs and alcohol for the first time. That's according to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration or SAMHSA. The results are not news to teens.

"You could get drunk one night and you could be hung over, but you can't go to school with a hangover 'cuz people will know. I guess it's easier to get away with it during summer," says one teen interviewed by CNN. [1:33]

SAMHSA has been warning about teen alcohol and drug use for years and the latest study is a continuation of its efforts says SAMHSA's Westley Clark. "There's no sense of discouragement.....We need to be consistent with our messaging and recognize that things change, information changes, media changes so that what we can do is keep the messaging up."
