Dems: God never left our party

By Steve Kastenbaum, CNN

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - Heads are bowed in prayer inside room 211 at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Last night, Democrats put the word 'god' back into their party platform following some strong criticism. For the folks at this daily prayer session though, god and the party never parted ways.

Delegates here are fine tuning the message that you can have deep religious convictions and still vote for a Democrat. It's a puzzle the party has been trying to crack for years.

Christina Forrester is founder and president of the group Christian Democrats of America:

[0:35] “The notion that one party holds a cornerstone on Christianity, that’s breaking and that’s what one of our goals is – to break that stereotype because the reason that we’re Democrats is because we are Christians.”

It’s up to Reverend Derrick Harkins to make sure that people of faith see their values reflected in the party’s platform. He’s the National Director of Faith Outreach for the DNC:

[3:15] “I really believe that people are excited because we’re talking about the ideas that really resonate with people across the spectrum in terms of faith.”

But skeptics like Pastor Robert Parham of Nashville, Tennessee remain unconvinced:

[3:31] “Some faith leaders feel that oftentimes the National Democratic Party on the faith front is all hat and no cattle.”

The trick for Democrats in Charlotte is to bring religion into the public square, but not so much so that it offends people who believe it doesn’t belong there.

How do you view the relationship between religion and Democratic politics? Join the conversation below.

If republicans are people of personal responsiblity then why are republicans complaining about the economy ? Why are you waiting for Obama and the Government to make your life better. If your having a tough time guess what it's your fault. Stop blaming Obama. What you need Obama to take care of you ?

Okay so WHY was God taken out? That's the question no one wants to answer in the interviews. Was it simply an accident or was it done on purpose? Hey, if he was simply forgotten or unintentionally overlooked then fine. Just admit it and move on. Or if they wimply wanted to step out into a "new era enlightened" sort of thing that's fine too. But why was god taken out? And most importantly, why the evasion and secrecy surrounding it?

Dem's saying 'we're more Christian than Christians" is complete is nuts. Jesus said to love one another, but he didn't say to condone others' wayward, non-Christian ways. Jesus expressed love and consideration for Mary Magdalen who, purportedly, was of a wayward nature. But Mary Magdalen changed her ways and became a deciple of Jesus. Christians should love the GLBT's, and we do. But it does not mean that their lifestyle is according to Christian principles and morals, and Christians don't have to condone/accept that it is and kowtow to them.

You are correct Mary did change her ways but she changed once she received Jesus' unconditional love. The GOP are trying to get people to conform to Christian values by imposing laws and rules that they are not prepared to understand. They can't force anyone to want to know God that is a personal decision. The GOP are turning people away from God by misrepresenting him and that makes me mad as heck.

I see nowhere in the Bible where Jesus condemns anybody for sincerely loving another and entering into a committed monogamous relationship with the other. Such a notion makes no sense and fits nowhere into christian spirituality. To think otherwise is simply corrupting the word of God in order to condone cultural prejudices.

Dorothy, Christ affirmed marriage as between a man and woman in Matthew 19. Romans 1, 1 Timothy 1:9-10 and a few other verses also make clear the Bible's stance on homosexuality. If you want to support same-sex marriage, feel free to, but the Bible doesn't back you up on that.

Thanks for making this simple point that so many people miss. While I don't think we need to focus on sin and wrongdoing, everyone knows they are not perfect after all; at the same time we can't tell people "You're not sinning" and then pipe up with "Hey, you need a Savior!". That just doesn't work.

As for politics. God is not a Republican or a Democrat. Based off everything I've learned, it seems that Republican ideas respect our liberties, our rights, and also help more people. For whatever it's worth, I wasn't raised a hardcore Republican, my parents were apolitical and I was a moderate until college when I started to educate myself and was introduced to wonderful thinkers like Thomas Sowell. Everyone in this country should read Basic Economics.

As for Christianity and politics, we're to watch out for our neighbor, but nothing about that compels that it has to be the gov't doing the watching. I think you can make a very strong case that relegating that responsibility to the gov't is at best not helpful, and at worst, counter-productive. As I've heard Republicans say before, Democrats have good intentions but are the results of their programs always good? Democrats also measure how much you care by how much you spend (tax dollars), but that's a bad metric. The actual results are what you should be looking at and free markets have done more to lift people out of poverty then anything else.

Apparently the principles of our Founding Fathers are being cast aside:

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." -Thomas Jefferson

Does it even matter to this country anymore????
Jefferson must be rolling in his grave (on account of both parties).

I believe Jefferson, according to what I have read, meant the establishment of one church or particular way of worship being endorsed by the gov't, not the belief in one God. I think some people miscontrue the meaning of "separation of church and state" for their own agenda. And yes, Jefferson is probably rolling in his grave, But I think it's because the gov't has infiltrated our lives so much

Steve Kastenbaum from CNN Radio here.

@CNNsukz – How can you say Democrats don't believe in god when every morning here a room inside the convention hall has been filled with people taking party in a morning prayer service and hundreds of people jammed into a larger meeting room on two occasions for the Faith Council meetings? I've met lots of people of faith here. Are you saying your definition of faith and religion is more accurate then theirs? Careful, you're in dangerous territory if that is your message.

@Jean Sartre – Whether you like it or not, a majority of Americans have some sort of faith, some sort of belief in a god, as part of their lives. Many of these people belong to progressive churches, synagogues and mosques. Social justice issues are at the core of their belief systems. For them, the most effective way to deal with issues of social justice, the environment, poverty, etc.. is through public policy. Their values are closely aligned with many of the core issues included in the Democratic Party platform.

Some historians say that our ethics and moral values have their roots in religious teachings. While you may believe that there is a natural tendency for people to want to live a moral and ethical life regardless of whether they believe in a god, people of faith say the tendency to be moral and ethical is the result of religious teachings being woven throughout history.

Steve- there are people within the Democratic party who believe in God. There are a significant number that do not. Many of them are posting comments on this site. The fact that the prayer meeting is crowded does not mean anything. What is more significant is that those wanting to fundamentally transform American society attack religion because it is a traditional value. When institutions such as religion or the family come under assault, it is because there are elements who do not want American to continue in its current form. It is not hard to determine who those elements are.

the best answer to Republicans who want to crow about god, is to remind them that their entire platform is anything but what their savior claimed was important. They do not care for the least of these. They only wish for more power and money in this world, relying on obvious lies to get it. So much for "thou shalt not bear false witness" and listening to this god say how much it hates lies and liars, even if they think they're lying for it (Romans 3).

I feel sorry for some of them. I am reminded by Jesus' prayer to God in his last minutes to forgive them because they know not what they do. Yet, I am also very angry at them because they can read Jesus' message of tolerance and do not incorporate it into their lives, their relationships with others. Tolerance has been displaced with an angry assault on those who they say do not take personal responsibility for their own care. Okay. I get it. But, what they have done is to allow themselves to be sucked into a view of the world which is not at all "Christian". Instead, it is Darwin's view of the natural order of things. Only the fittest shall survive in the natural order of things and the rest are allowed to die. They have adopted Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and Friedrich Nietzsche. Ayn Rand is an atheist. Friedrich Neitzsche is the author of the view that "God is dead". He believed that the old moral code had failed, that a new "superman" would arise out of the ashes and create a new moral code. Ayn Rand believes that the new "superman" will be the capitalist who is driven, not by compassion for others, but by a cold obsessive thirst for more, that man is best served if he is allowed to promote his own rational self interest. These are not Jesus' messages. VP candidate Paul Ryan made reading Ayn Rand mandatory for his staff. God may not have abandoned the GOP. But it seems to be abandoning God.

I do not know whether the Democratic Party has been abandoned by God or not. I do know that there are a lot of people in the party who respect religion, Christian, Muslim, Budhist and Jew. I do believe that the policies of the Democrats seem to reflect Jesus' message of tolerance. What the Democrats seem to have done, however, which offends the "Christian Right" is to take that message of tolerance further than the "Christian Right" wants to take it. They are so tolerant that they believe that the "Christian" symbols should take a back seat to Constitutional notions of equal treatment, due process, freedom of speech and religious liberty. The "Christian Right" believes that its morality must be promoted over any other and that its symbols must be prominently displayed.

Studies seem to show that the "Christian Right" is more loyal to party and church than the Democrats might be and therefore more inclined to "proudly" display that loyalty as a symbol. I persoanlly see that display of loyalty to church party as acts of arrogance out of character with Jesus' teaching. The GOP therefore seems to me to be a party of "exclusion" – a posture which, to me, is in conflict with Jesus' teaching of tolerance. The Democrats, therefore, to me, seem to better reflect and represent Jesus' message. I would say, therefore, that the Democrats are following the Commandment not to take the name of the lord in vain. It is pure vanity to keep calling on God's name in the hope of winning converts to the religion or to the party. IT IS VANITY. I may be able to conclude, therefore, that God may actually be more pleased with the Democrats.

Satan the Devil is the one controlling things, controlling the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 1John 5:19 says the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one. Those who are in power their god is Satan the Devil, and no matter how good they try, they just can not solve mankind problems. But soon God's Kingdom will wiped them out and those who oppose God's Kingdom! John 12:31, Dan 2:44, 1 John 2:17

Their is a problematic disconect between the Democratic Party and Christianity (which holds true for all three Abrahamic faiths and their offshoots).

Christianty DOES teach that you should (1) take care of the poor, (2) be your "brother's keeper", (3) support widows and orphans, and to (4) provide for the elderly with respect.

That sounds like the Democratic Party rather well. Indeed, the Party is rather concerned with the poor, needy, elderly, and broken family.

There is a faith disconnect here, however, as powerful as those obvious theological divides (abortion, marriage rights, etc).

Christians are call to do these things and be gracious givers. When the government does these things, it robs people of the ability to do good.

If the laws had compelled the "Good Samaritan" to take care of the roadside victim, would we herald him as an example of the goodness of God through the actions of men? No. If he would have been thrown in prison had he not helped the man and paid for his recovery, he would have been acting out of his own interest, not out of goodness.

If the government imprisons me, robs me by force and authority, if I do not comply in paying those taxes, then I loose my right to claim the goodness of the needy being fed, clothed, and doctored. Morally, when I take a hobo out for a burger, I am doing a greater good than the hundreds I am feeding through foodstamps and welfare in my taxes.

If the government compells me to do good, them I am not doing good.

You won't find a Republican out there who does not want to help the needy – but they want to be the one helping the needy. If I feed a man, I try to feed his soul as well, maybe myself – maybe through an orginization I choose that shares my faith (like the Salvation Army).

The Democrates want to rob me of that moral goodness through command. Therefore, no matter how good what they push for is, it cannot be a good act for me. Add to this the many evil acts of government, and I cannot even claim that they are doing good on my behalf through taxes without also taking upon myself the guilt of the evils they do (which is why Christians are so adamant about taxes not being used for evil causes, like infanticide).

I understand how good people could be confused – for many of the things the Democrates want to do ARE good. They are the good acts, however, that belong to you, your community, and your church and the Government taking over marriage, welfare, and the care of our elders is the greatest breach of the "separation of Church and State" that our country has undergone.

Whenever you do good for someone you don't have to say a word about God because they will feel his presence and seek him out and he will reply. Its all in faith. I believe the GOP has lost its faith and are trying way too hard to replace God's role on their own. Live and let God.

I am a Christian who has strong Christian convictions and a personal relationship with Christ. Both parties have flaws when it comes down to the Word of God; however, I chose to be a Democrat (voted for Republican before) because the party cares about all people. The Word of God says; "God loves the sinner but hates the sin." How can the RNC care so much about one moral issue like same sex marriage but does not want to help the working poor with health insurance? On the other hand I do not agree with same sex marriage but assisting the poor is what Christ did when He walked this earth for 33 years. I am an black female who have friends that are from all racial backgrounds and I don't see color but have been discriminated against by GOP supporters. Finally, I know GOP supporters who don't attend church nor do they seek God through time of sorrow or happiness. Often times I am praying for or with them when they are going through tough times because there's not a personal relationship with God.

Democrats help the poor and children and racial groups by keeping them in their place. Welfare and food stamps help someone to not get a job and not better themselves. Republicans/Conservatives are not against giving aid to people who truly need it but personal responsibility and hard work have to come in at some point. Otherwise, you are just "redistributing" wealth (from me, a middle-class working person) and giving it to "groups". Look how many Democrats are rich. All this money that's supposed to be going to help people get jobs ends up in campaign contributors pockets (Solyndra, et. al.). BTW, for all Mormon haters Harry Reid is a Mormon, go hate on him some. Mitt Romneys personal religious beliefs as stated on his website are in line with traditional Christian beliefs doctrinally. The ONLY Party who respects ALL Americans and works for the benefit of ALL Americans is the Democratic Party. We represent the true diversity of America, from race, to ethic background, to all religions, to both poor and rich. We care about the welfare and health and education and success of ALL People and we WORK in ACTIONS to meet our religious beliefs of what Jesus and God taught us and instructed us to do in caring for everyone – even the "least ot us". Republicans talk a lot about religion then ignore, demean, and wipe the poor off the soles of their shoes and walk right past them.

Please take God out of the platform if that is what democrats want that’s what they should get.. They should be true to their beliefs or lack thereof. It is just that the vote on putting God back in was a little reminiscent of the way the dems rammed Obama care and a stimulus package nobody wanted down America’s throat. Amidst roars of boos the DNC leaders put God and the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel back in to the platform. Ahhh democracy in action.

I may be mistaken but I believe Paul Ryans voted for the stimulus, and if he disgorge something that was being forced down his throat then he's either a wimp or a hypocrite. I think it's probably the latter.

God and his call to care about ALL PEOPLE has always been at the center of the Democratic Party. Republicans have so destroyed the image of actual Christian values and teachings, Democrats were afraid to be painted with the "God" Party who has shown us nothing but words of hate, lies, bigotry, demeaning of the poor, "me first and only" philosophy that Democrats did not want to be seen as fake as the Republican do-nothings of Jesus teachings. We believe in actions of faith not word alone. We believe there is God for ALL Americans and we deliver it in our actions and programs. We just believe God should not be used to shove extremist policies down our throats. Separation of church and state exists for a reason and Republicans have proven that to us like no other before them. There is no true God in the Republican Party but greed and power.

@mcskadittle - Jesus is conservative because He wants us to live by "narrow and straight path" and not by our whimsical views concocted by our fertile minds - as liberals tend to do. He may be liberal in the sense that he rebelled against the orthodoxy of his times - that wanted to do lip service to the external form of the scriptures without understanding their real purpose and essence which is to love God and serve and glorify God. He is neither conservative or liberal - He is God's son ... His servant .. and He does not want us to label ourselves politically what to speak of us labeling Him with political words such as liberal or conservative ... He's got nothing to do with either.

The Democrats help the poor and children and racial groups by keeping them in their place. Just a week or so ago a friend and I had a heated discussion about this election. We both agreed there is a HUGE divide in the two parties. I am starting to think the centrist is a dying group. The parties are so different in the direction they want to take this great country and both parties believe it spells disaster for the other. Then along comes yesterday flop at the DNC. GOD and the removal of it. We all agreed the voting was fishy and the way it was handled was insane. But there is a larger story within a story. The boo's... Yes... The boo's.. I believe the Dems are falling further and further left to the point it can not be tilted back. In the fall I see the Christian faith jumping the boat and joining the Republicans. Then there will be the greatest divide this country has ever felt and quite possibly the next civil war. Faith/Religeon has been the root of so many wars in the history of humans. In my opinion this war will be the mother of all civil wars and quite possibly the end of America.

Ken, I have to agree with you to a point: A war between believers and unbelievers has been foretold for centuries. It is the final Armageddon spoken of in the Bible. But, it is a conflict among nations, not a civil war specific to one. It is very disappointing to see the instability in the Democratic platform respecting God, but if you listened to the verbal vote last night, there were more yeas than nays. The anti-God movement in the Democratic Party is being fuelled by a few rouge leaders and does not reflect the feelings of most of the rank and file, who are like sheep being led to the slaughter. I also think you must understate the effect that Mitt Romney may have on reuniting this country if he is chosen in November. He has succeeded at everything he has done. He has real world experience, and if there is one thing the conservatives don't like about him, it is his moderate position on many bi-partisan issues. There is hope for us. America can survive the conflict it finds itself in. And it can be done without civil unrest.

I believe you may want to reword that. The term separation of church and state has never been in the Constitution and was only a Court decision. And we know how many decisions courts have made in the past 5-50 years that have made us all shake our heads. If you take the 1st. amendment as it is written, the court decision that ruled separation of church and state is in fact going against what the 1st. amendment is stating.

The separation of church and state is not in the Constitution. The government is not supposed to establish a state sponsored religion. It doesn't mean that you're supposed to leave God out of everything that is "public" as has been demonstrated by many Supreme Court decisions which uphold the right to pray in school, to have a Bible in school, public places. In the Jefferson papers he used the phrase "wall of separation between church and state" meaning that no Government had the right to dictate in religious matters. He attended church services in the House of Representatives.

Holding a gun to taxpayers heads and extracting money from them, and then passing it on to other people, is not compassion, it is theft. Many of us "uncompassionate" people who see their government running amok, and are only trying to keep it from getting out of hand, are in fact understanding and helpful when those truly in need require a hand. Government, on the other hand, seeks only to create further dependence and subservience from those it doles out its favors to. It does not seek to promote personal responsibility or self-sufficiency, whereas charity at least tries to.

Wouldn't you rather have someone leading our Country that had faith and not afraid to admit it or someoe that feared no one and believed in nothing bigger than themselves? What do we do in our Court systems when they stop asking do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth so help you God? What is there to lose when no one believes in a higher power and having to answer for their actions anymore? It is going there now and I believe we will suffer as a Country because of it. And for all of you that do not believe, it's your soul, not mine. Do as you will. I will take my chance with God.

Why do you think Democrats are Godless, evil, and damned to hell? Are you playing God – Judging men's hearts? I have a Christain, speak in tonges, pray for people, feed the poor, walk and talk with God daily – and I am a Democrat, my mother and father were democrats as were their parents, and their parents before them. Who are you to tell me that I am not Christian because I vote for a Democrat – Really??? What does the Bible say about that?

Regarding abortion – I am thankful that I was never in the position to have to make that decision for myself, I think I would not have one – but, who am I to dicate to another woman what she is to do in her private life with her body? Everyone has to stand on their own before God in judgement for how they have lived their OWN life.

Regarding homosexual lifestyles – I am not another person's judge. What you do and believe in your heart, does not stain me. I have to give account for my life and what I do – I dont have to account for anyone but my life and how I lived it. If you choose to behave in a way I dont believe – thats on you.

Christianity is about Love, about helping others, and not being selfish, and serving God. Rebuplicans have stances that dont line up with Christianity – or at least the way Jesus – my savior taught in the bible. The Republicans believe to each his own – get all you can, and don't share with the less fortunate – for fear they will be taken advantage of. Thats not what Jesus taught. The republicans say they dont want government telling them they need to pay into a system to help the poor get medical coverage – they would rather see their neighbor die than see that they get the proper care they need to possibly save their life. Remember the Good Samaritan? He must have been a democrat.

Why can the republicans tell the "goverment" to get out of their lives and leave them to their own riches – yet think the government shoudl dictate how women should manage their reproductive lives? Seems like irony to me. I think the republicans use a false Christianity only when it "serves" their false platform.

You cant judge men's hearts and determine the destiny of their souls...period.

I can't judge their hearts, or say they are in hell – Im not their judge. But, these men, were more sinful than the history books lead you to believe. Remember David – a man next to Gods own heart? – how Godly was he? I am thankful for their committment to their country – but I dont hold them up as icons to pattern my life after.

Being a Christian and helping the poor doesn't necessarily mean that you support a party that takes money from people who earned it and give it to people who didn't. That is stealing. Of course, this is legal because the "Government" does it. Obama supported letting a child die even after he/she had survived a botched abortion. If the woman wants the child dead then that child should die. Maybe they could extend that to age 2 because that is inconvenient on the poor woman who wants to go party some more. Sucking the brains out of a fully developed child is inhuman, detestable and an abomination. A party that promotes that will never get my vote. Life is not given by the Government but by God.

I find it funny that an article that is attempting to lend support to the notion that they have not abandoned God, has God spelt with a little “g” is funny. The fact is one can believe in God or not believe in God it’s a personal choice based upon many factors. But if you’re going to believe in God then you should support those things He stands for or has made plain in Scripture, otherwise you’re like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, and spit out of the mouth of the Savior. The Bible clearly states that homosexuality goes against God’s design and that marriage is between a man and a woman, the Bible and Jesus are also very clear on abortion and many other issues being presented by the Democratic Party. While I empathize with the Democratic position on many social issues and I even sympathize with same sex relationships and believe some legality short of marriage may be appropriate, I could not allow my convictions of faith which supersedes both my country and family, and vote Democratic. On the subject of abortion, I have met many women from varying backgrounds and beliefs who all have had abortions and have found one thing consistent, they live in utter regret and depression over the act they did so many years ago. I have never met anyone who had an abortion outside of rape, incest, or her health who has ever said they were glad they had done it. When you make life altering acts easy to obtain to people who are scared, confused, and young it stands a very good chance of turning out badly. As I understand it even Roe in Roe vs. Wade regretted her decision and is now a pro-life supporter.

K210 It’s hard to even know where to begin. Where did JESUS say anything against homosexuality? If you are relying upon Leviticus please confirm you support killing your children for disobeying you, death to those who work on Sunday, death for those who mix cloth with other materials, death for those who eat pork, etc. etc. Where does the Bible anywhere say that marriage can only be between one man and one woman? Again if you rely upon the Old Testament please confirm you support polygamy and the right of a husband to kill his wife or to divorce his wife as he sees fit. Where in Bible and Jesus [xic] does it say anything about “abortion and many other issues being presented by the Democratic Party”? Abortion was and infanticide was a common practice then and remained so up until the 19th Century. Is it your position that if someone were glad to have an abortion it would be OK? Or are you saying because nobody enjoyed it should be illegal? You note an exception for “rape, incest,” – do you support Paul Ryan’s argument that an abortion of fetus conceived by a rapist who did not physically brutalize the mother should be illegal?

Obama supports a deviant view of woman's life represented by Sandra Fluke's promiscuous sleeping around lifestyle. He is insulting womanhood by reducing their life's desires and needs to abortion clinics to support a Fluke lifestyle. Most of women actually want to settle down and marry a man who loves them. And all women have inherent desire and need to have kids and family with that man while seeking economic development at the same time. This is the mainstream womans desires and lifestyle. Obama is trying to project a fringe lifestyle as the mainstream woman lifestyle - as if woman's life is centered around abortion clinics and contraception. No a woman's life is centered around family, kids, husband, LOVE and economic needs (jobs, career etc) to support that life ...

For the life of me I can't understand why conservatives like you can not understand that it was conservatives who formed the KKK. Liberals were the one's trying to gain equal rights for blacks and other minorities. Conservative's broke from the Democratic Party back in the 1960's when the party passed Civil Rights laws. The old guard CONSERVATIVE democrats joined the republican party. The Republican Party is now ran by the same people who started the KKK back in the day. The democratic party has purged themselves of their hate and vile. We are now proud progressive liberals who fight for the poor, elderly, blacks, gay, women. The things Jesus said we should do. The old guard KKK/Republicans still continue to fight for the white men, the rich man, the fake christian. When this world ends and we stand before GOD almighty He will know what was in our hearts. He will judge you on what you did for the least in society. I can stand before him with a clear conscious and say LORD I did my best I stood up for those who didn't have a voice.

Your version of Christianity is TWISTED!! You can't be a Christian while supporting a party that says to cut off food stamps to poor children and the elderly while ELIMINATING TAXES on the RICH!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!

It's like people just don't believe the Southern Strategy was a real thing. Considering the sad state of education in this country, I suppose it's not difficult to understand why.

Wearing God on you sleeve or putting his name in a man made document doesn't make you Godly. What you do for others is what makes you Godly. What you do for the sick, the weak, the poor, the criminals, the least of society is what God looks at. Quit using your FAKE religion as an excuse to bash the party that isn't pefect but does way more for the one's Jesus talked about. The republican party says GREED IS GOOD. Please tell me where Jesus says that Greed is GOOD? Where in the bible do you get that the rich shoudl have it better off at the expensie of the poor.

Unfortunately, both parties exploit Christians toward their causes, and then by and large don't do much for the faith. The GOP needs to seriously consider how it looks at taking care of the needy in this country, and the Dems need to seriously look at how they fail to take care of the neediest among us – the unborn. We know from many passages in the Bible that God is all about protecting the most vulnerable in society. Both parties have largely failed to make sure that happens. And I don't believe that taking care of the needy always (or even often) means giving folks handouts – it usually doesn't . But being committed to meaningful and successful 'hand-ups' is what we're struggling to find out there in the political landscape. In the end, in both parties, we're often more concerned about ourselves than others – take for instance the question – are YOU better off than before this president was in office. Not a great question to make your presidential decision on – how about does this person provide the servant leadership this office of president needs? That's a better one, and a start towards the right kinds of questions Christians should be asking themselves.

Well spoken. I believe one of the differences between the parties is where the hand-out/hand-up comes from. One is from government who actually encourages people to take a hand out. The other works through individual contributions, maybe churches or other philanthropic organizations which may not be as far reaching or obvious in the public eye as generational welfare.

God has been a part of American public discourse from before the Declaration of Independence up until today. It is just part of the public language that Americans of any and all ethnicities, races, and creeds use when we are communicating with one another. So when an American speaks of God at a public event like a political convention, you don't get any real insight into how that person really feels about God. Those feeling could range from the deepest faith and love through indifference and straight into hostility. You really can't tell, all you know is that they invoked God in some way. On the other hand, when there is an objection of some sort to the use of the word God or to referencing God in a public statement, then we know that there is some sort of axe to grind, or an aversion or even hostility towards the idea of God and often towards people of faith. We all know this, but those who make their true feelings known by objecting to speaking of God in public would prefer that we pretend we didn't see what we have seen, and that we don't know what we really know. And so when something happens like mention of God getting booed at a political convention, we get blog posts like this one trying to explain and justify. Thank you Democrats for letting us all know how you really feel about God.

I was in D.C. some years ago and noticed there was a liberal protest on the mall there. When I got closer I saw a young girl waving an Israeli flag. By the time I got to within 20-30 feet there was some other liberal in the crowd spitting in her face. I walked away thinking that girl probably would remain an ardent liberal despite the hatred in her own party for her. That's what happens when loyalty is valued over truth. Sad.

Many many people are charitable and help their fellow man. Problem is so many now know they dont have to do anything and the government will throw them crumbs. Guess Democrats are satisfied with crumbs. I dont want the governments plantation. I want good decent jobs for Americans so we can work to get the ingredients to bake our own cake and the government can keep their controlling crumbs.

Our Party is spelled "DEMOCRAT" and almost all members of Congress voted for the war in Iraq because Bush not only lied to our Allies, to the UN, to the American People but also to Congress about WMDs that never existed in Iraq. Bush should have been impeached right then and handed over to the Hague for prosecution as a war criminal for his use of torture which is an international crime. All the debt, the murder of our soldiers, the lie of the whole war rests on Bush and Cheney. Maybe we should take their pensions and use them to pay for their lies to the families of the soldiers they so easily sacrificed for their lie.

They give to their own church and their own political right-wing causes. They do not give more to general aid and assistance groups to help the poor, the sick, the needy. Indeed, the entire fight over taxes is that they do not want to give to "others" than their own in-group (family, church, the money class, similarly colored people, etc.)

Raised a Southern Baptist I know about "Christians" and these so-called "Christians" you reference give to their CHURCH not to the charities that help the poor, the homeless, the sick, the "least of us" as Jesus taught. Their "tithe" goes to their Church who uses it to spread more extremism that has nothing to do with charity or anything Jesus spent his life doing. Jesus would view these Republicans as the "moneychangers in the Temple" He threw out for cheating the People and defiling the House of God.

Sorry Greg, but your understanding of history is wrong. 54 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence went to Christian worship services 3 times weekly (so did George Washington). Separation of church and state means that the state won't run the church and the church won't run the state, but "they shall work together for their mutual benefit". "The church shall not run the state, neither shall the state run the church. But make no mistake about it: without the church there will be no state", George Washington. Check out the writings of the founding fathers – you'll be amazed.
