Honoring a fallen ambassador

By Emma Lacey-Bordeaux, CNN

(CNN) - In the weeks since Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed in Benghazi, Libya, a debate has raged over the Obama administration's handling of the tragedy.

Quite apart from those pointed questions and hearings on Capitol Hill, another discussion is happening. One that got its start when Tarek El-Messidi decided to put out a call for letters of condolence:

[1:53] Our initial goal was only one thousand letters in ten days.

El-Messidi put out the call from his organization Celebrate Mercy. He started the group to help foster understanding about Islam and the Prophet Mohamed:

[1:32] "I think I was very worried and a lot of Muslims were very worried that they would attribute his death the teaching of Islam."

The letters poured in. They received over 7,000 from 115 different nations. El-Messidi wasn't the only one touched by this outpouring.

Dr. Anne Stevens, Ambassador Stevens's sister, heard about the letters and reached out to El-Messidi.

Two weeks ago the two met. El-Messidi brought along all those letters, bound in a two-inch thick book. Stevens says she'll carry the book with her when she visits family for Thanksgiving.

[2:12] "To think that people we didn't even know were writing us letters of condolence just because they were so touched by the death of my brother was really very touching."

Stevens and El-Messidi both say they hope the Ambassador's legacy of forging relationships of dialogue across cultures will not be forgotten. As El-Messidi puts it:

[5:28] "Without sitting down at the same table without having a human dialogue there's not going to be peace in the world."

Simply writing letters does nothing to bring the Ambassador back to life. Simply presenting letters to his family does nothing but reinforce the idea that Islam kills and Muslims give lip service to 'Peace" after the Kaffir is dead. Have you taken up a collection to help the family financially? Have you helped hunt down the terrorists that killed him? Have you done anything other than write some letters and then call CNN to take a picture and write a story about it? Looks like you are grandstanding to me Mr. Tarek El-Messidi.

The sentiments, condolences and wishes of so many people don't matter? Only something that entailed giving money would matter? Of course nothing can bring the Ambassador back, but to just go ahead and discard the condolences of so many people, how wise is that? And what I don't understand, is that when the man's sister herself has accepted this gesture, and has welcomed it, why are so many ignorant people continuing to push it away. It's okay though. There will always be haters. there were people who firmly stood against Martin Luther King Jr., but if he had given up, people like me would still be eating in a 'colored only' restaurant. Keep it up brother Tarek, May Allah bless your efforts. Graham Greene once said "Hate, is a lack of imagination". So let's let the haters hate, and forge on.

And Rosstrex, you shouldn't forget the Libyans who died trying to defend the Ambassador. They were muslims too you know. Their families lost loved ones and dear ones too. Crazy people come in all shapes, colors, sizes, from all religious backgrounds... Wasn't it a white, graduate student who shot people in Aurora, Colorado, killing and wounding people for no reason whatsoever? Should I use that to build up hatred for all white guys in the US? And before you say that was an isolated incident, let me remind you of others, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold..and the list doesn't end there. But I don't see any systemic hatred for the entire white male population based on the actions of these few nuts. Hating the entire muslim population is similarly ignorant and short sighted.

Lybians died in the attack defending the Ambassador??? What were their names? Can you give me their ages, descriptions .... anything? I thought not... Once again Muslims spread lies designed to create a perception that they would actually give their lives defending the kafir in an attack.

Please if all you have are lies and nonsense just don't bother responding.

It's sad to send letters of condolences?
It's sad to condemn the horrific actions of ignorant people calling themselves "followers" of an Abrahamic Religion?
It's sad to unite people to reach out to a family that is in need of emotional support?
It's sad to educate people about the true teachings of one of the basic Abrahamic Religions?
It's sad to strengthen relationships between cultures?

    If that's all sad...
    What's happy then? :)

The above was a reply to Xandre's following comment:

Its sad that this is what the American government supports,Promotes, and finances.
What's more sad is that people remain quiet about it or excuse it rather than stop it.

Yes the Koran says these things. It also says to "defend" Islam when attacked. If the Koran says both Kill and Love mankind based upon how mankind is treating Muslims doesn't that make the passages you are quoting here conditional?

Conditional upon interpretation and conditional upon the perception of the Muslim.

Why do you take the verse in context? Let's read the next verse "Fight those who fight you, but DO NOT TRANSGRESS, for Allah loveth not the transgressors!" Quran 2:190

I've read the entire Quran, yea there's some parts that talk about some battles that happened in Arabia back in the 7th century because the early Muslims were being attacked by the Meccan pagans, some Jewish tribes allied themselves with the Meccans too.

It's good to see that Chris Stevens legacy is alive and well. Unfortunately, he is not. Nor is Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty and Sean Smith. It's a little hard to think about all of it on Thanksgiving Day. I appreciate their service. Maybe President Obama will think of them when he sits down to his Thanksgiving Day meal. Maybe he will call their families and express his deepest symathies and offer an apology for not providing the support they needed and deserved.

Your statements are quite insulting, especially because you seem to think you know what the Ambassador lived and strove for. He worked very tirelessly to serve people, regardless of their background, and by superimposing your lack of compassion and empathy on him by presuming how he'd respond, you insult him. You should be ashamed. But worry not, we can each make amends and learn to see the important truths and principles that unite us all: mercy, so celebrate mercy.

This is a bunch of bullcrap. The name of the organization is "Celebrate Mercy." Mercy implies forgiveness, or forebearance. Like they are giving the slain ambassador a break. Which can only mean they are forgiving him for not being Muslim.

Deceitful words from a deceitful religion. Sounds good on the surface until you realize they are forgiving him for not being a Muslim and not apologizing for their religion.

Don't let your bias control your heart. If you were to read up about the Celebrate Mercy group you would find they were founded to celebrate the legacy of the prophet Muhammad(s) who Muslims believe was and is a mercy to mankind. The organization was not created solely for the letter campaign. Love.

I suggest you actually take a closer look at what the organization is all about. The name "Celebrate Mercy" was inspired by the character of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wassalam), who Muslims believe was a sign of God's Mercy. It is an organization that seeks to represent the principles of Islam, as embodied by the mercy of the Prophet. They are very clearly saying that happened was wrong, and that Muslims worldwide do not support it, and are terribly sorry. They are making their moral inclinations clear, which is the first step of any positive transformation: affirm your intentions and clearly so. Instead of hating and continuing to misrepresent their wonderful intentions, perhaps you can do something productive to contribute to peace? It's not a one-man show.

But since we're talking about taking classes, then how about this (and I really am serious about this offer): How about you take an Islamic Course, from a well established Islamic Scholar, and then we can have a discussion. I can even recommend one for you if you'd like (which you can search later on to ensure it's validity :)) . What differentiates human beings from animals, is their brain. How we nurture this brain is through education and knowledge. The more we communicate based on emotional outbursts and limited experiences brings us back to our animalistic side. So that's why I would urge you to join me in expanding our knowledge.

No one has the right to call any one of the basic Abrahamic Religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam), or any religion for that matter, as deceitful. These religions have been established since the beginning of time, and are linked by the spiritual objective of humanity to do goodness. For anyone to ignorantly call any of these essential worldy meanings as deceitful ... merely based on others ignorantly saying they are "followers" of one of these religions.. is yet another attack and a transgression against humanity. It is Ignorance based on Ignorance.

      Revenge is against Islam.

Caliph Ali was once fighting in a war imposed on Muslims, and the chief of the Unbelievers confronted him. During the fight, the Ali was able to overcome him, who fell down on the ground and Ali was about to kill him. This person, knowing his fate now, had no choice so he spit on the face of Ali. Ali immediately got up and left him alone. The man came running to him and asked, "You had a chance to kill me since I was defeated; how come you didn't use your sword?" Ali said, "I have no personal animosity toward you. I was fighting you on behalf of God. If I had killed you after you spat on my face, then it would have become my personal revenge which I do not wish to take." That Unbeliever chief became a Muslim immediately.

Take heed: your statements are contrary to the teachings of Islam. Just learn from the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassalam) himself.

In Makkah, his people inflicted him with every kind of suffering, eventually forcing him to emigrate to Madeenah, and then waged war on him for five years. However, when he conquered Makkah without bloodshed in the twenty-first year of his Prophethood, he asked the Makkan unbelievers who were awaiting his decision about them: “How do you expect me to treat you?” They responded unanimously: "You are a noble one, the son of a noble one." He announced to them his decision:

“You may go free! No reproach this day shall be on you; may God forgive you.”

        This is mercy.

Amazing that both of you are speaking about War and Islam as if the murder and death created in War is somehow disconnected from Islam. Each of the two examples – If Islam did not exist it is doubtful that the wars would have occurred. If Mohammed had never existed the world would have been far more peaceful. I know Muslims cannot admit this simple truth. Mohammed brought death to the world through his desire for a city. He may have done good things to those around him but he created a religion that kills all others.

So Christians are being murdered in their Churches in Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Iraq and you call anyone who would bring up the simple truth that Islam kills a hater.

Unreal that you ignore the murder of the Kaffir and pay attention to letters written to one Kaffir's family and pat Muslims on the back as if it means something. How about rebuilding some Churches burned to the ground Muslims? How about healing the children murdered in their beds or helping the communities heal from constant terrorism in the name of your religion.

Oh can't do that.... Ok write some more letters then.

I'm sorry but Christianity has a very, very long history of violence and killing as well – any religion I've come across does. You can't attack other faiths while trying to defend your own. Look at the crusades, look at King Charlemagne – that guy had at least 11 wars... Has Islam even come close to the same body count as Christianity? I couldn't say but that's besides the point. Every religion has at least some history of killing people simply because they're different.

Xedicon – The difference here is Christians, Buddhists, Atheists, Jews, Seiks, Daoists, and Agnostics do not kill people for simply not believing as they do. They do not blow themselves up claiming Allah told them to do it. They do not rape, kidnap or murder through some interpretation of what Mohammed ay or may not have said. They do not need to justify death to the other because they have somehow been attacked.

What I am writing here would get me killed in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan and the Majority of other Islamic states. In Secular lands we do not have blasphemy laws. That is the difference, if that does not prove how evil Islam is then I cannot reach you.

Wherever Muslims are found in large numbers we have murder, rape, kidnapping and death. Islam is the "Abomination that causes desolation" in the bible. Simply look it upl

You call me an ignorant redneck yet offer half truths and outright lies to back up what you are saying.
Dr Martin Luther King was a Christian. He lead the civil rights march to Selma and then even Washington DC. Along side him were MANY other Christians of Many other colors and backgrounds fighting for Equal rights. You claim that the "Christians" treated blacks badly... Try the US government and the US States treated them badly and you will be closer to the truth. Claiming that everyone was a "Christian" in the south or the US is a LIE purported by Muslims to justify how they discriminate based on Gender, Religion and Creed in EVERY Islamic State.

You tell me to "do History" The Crusades occurred after 463 years of Muslim: Murder, Rape, Kidnapping, Robbery and enslavement of Christians trying to simply go to the Holy Land. FINALLY the Christian Kingdoms stood up and fraught back. To this day Muslims and their apologists point to the Crusades as if it was an unprovoked attack. WRONG so why don't you "do History" prior to attempting to spread lies designed to support a religion that has always preyed on others especially Christians.

AHHHH Hitler – The old Muslim stand by – Hitler was an Agnostic in his own words. Simply read his words on the subject then get back to us on his "Christianity" You do say one thing that is true here – Religion can be used to kill and I would say that EVERY warlord in history has used the concept of God to get people to kill and die for him. Mohammed is simply practicing exactly the same formula all other warlords practiced. Mohammed was simply a warlord and Muslims prove it every day.

Anger and hatred goes against all religions. People should research completely before judging a whole religion or culture. The problem is the small few that don't follow the truth of their religions and pick and choose what to follow, while the majority of the world wants peace. Money and power does not bring happiness. Why can't we all join together in peace and stop allowing the minority that prefer hatred to control everything. Let's all try to step back and see what is truely in eachothers hearts. PEACE!! Why not instead look at the impact Islam had on those who became the greatest Muslims – the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassalam). Pre-Islamic barbaric, and ignorant Arabs, were transformed into the most refined, thoughtful, honourable, chivalrous, and moral individuals this world has ever seen.

Let's look at the Prophet Muhammad's (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassalam) own example:

By participating in the Slave trade Mohammed proved he was not God's prophet.

Please reframe from regurgitating what you're right wing, Islam hating friends tout. Please provide historical evidence of such activity. It's true slaves did exist in the times of prophet Mohammed (pbuh) but it was considered the most noble gesture to free a slave, a highly encouraged action. Slaves were hostile's who were captured and enslaved for a period of time as punishment i.e work for free. In todays culture you would call this community service. Remember there weren't prison's in that period. It was a society which showed maturity in law giving. In fact prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was honored by the US Supreme Court In 1935 for enforcing laws way ahead of it's time!

Jmuse – To ignore the reality of what Mohammed did shows that you simply do not want to think about who Mohammed was. Mohammed paid for slaves and helped create a market for slaves. Slaves were sold in Mecca until 1929. It took the treaty of Jeddah to stop Muslims from buying and selling people in their most "holy" city. Muslims refuse to simply think about the foundations of Islam. Instead you react with insults and anger rather than reason because if you reason you cannot follow Islam.

And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors. (Qur’an 5: 32)

As a Muslim my teaching have always been that to be a true believer I had to accept Judaism and Christianity. That's the foundation of this religion. Believing that since a "group" talks or acts on "behalf" of Islam is the kind of generalization that clearly does not say of an open mind. All Muslims are not terrorist and we do have feelings of sympathy. So please appreciate this act of humanity and do not try to diminish it since you are narrow minded.

"I think I was very worried and a lot of Muslims were very worried that they would attribute his death the teaching of Islam."

If not religion, what then was responsible for the death? Religion is the foundation for this extremism.

"Without sitting down at the same table without having a human dialogue there's not going to be peace in the world."

Lets start by relinquishing archaic, bronze age beliefs that only cloud judgment, create division, and halt human progress.

Everyday CNN posts a story like this. A story designed to promote Muslims as people. Yes I agree that Muslims are people just like everyone else.

That being said: Islam is vile on every level. A contrived religion created by a 7th century warlord that used his made up religion to get his followers to kill. Mohammed is no different than any other warlord. ALL of them used the cry "God is on our side" to get people to kill and die for them.

Muslims you follow a religion that says both kill and love. Some of you follow the "love" some of you don't. This is proven with each war, each atrocity, each murder, each kidnapping and each propaganda piece cnn has to write to support your religion.

The Ambassador was – by all accounts – a wonderful man. His death was by no means in vain: for the first time EVER in the "Arab Street" a vigil was held for a fallen American diplomat AND they marched onto extremist militia headquarters UNARMED.

Normally, when I hear the words honor and muslim in the same story, I am expecting to see another tragic story of an "honor killing". Only in the vile religion of islam does a man "honor kill" his wife or daughter for talking to boys, being disrespectful, driving a car, etc. Islam is a cancer that should be wiped off.

Really the world of muslims with over 2 billion people aren't represented by a handful of radicals? There is so much illiterate behaviour in Islamic countries. Would you rather go to a doctor who was taught Grey's Anatomy or one who Read it and told you what it meant? This article shows the true glimpse of what real Islam is that isn't represented by a small faction of misled people. KEEP IT UP!!! Jews, Muslims Christians all lived in peace for hundreds of years prior to the first crusade and thereafter as well. All religions need to speak up when injustice has been done.

Your view of history is so one dimensional it is unbelievable. 463 years of Muslims, Murdering, Raping, Attacking and Spreading by the Sword is what lead to the Crusades. Muslims to this day Decry the Crusades as if they were the victims of some unprovoked attack. Try reading some history. How about looking up Charles Martel and the battle of Tours if you want to see an unprovoked attack.

What happened was terrible, you only rub salt in the wounds of the family members of these families by trying to score political points out of this. If the president had labeled this a terrorist act within 2 days, 24 hours, or the same morning, would that have changed anything? Think about it, what was the motivation for this supposed "cover-up?" You think anyone would have voted any differently? You are delusional and I advise that when you listen to Hannity, Beck, Rush, and Savage, you realize that what they provide is ENTERTAINMENT, not real world news and insightful perspective.

Both have flogged this dead horse for weeks, not once mentioning how this would have changed anything. So tell me now, how would not mentioning/covering this up as being a terrorist attack in anyway be beneficial to Obama and his campaign? So if he came out and said this was a terrorist act, how would that in anyway change how the people of the US voted? Like we don't know there is terrorism in the world? Not only are you delusional, but your tin-foil hat conspiracy is not only crazy, but makes no rational sense.

It's a dead horse if half the nation thinks it's ok to let 4 Americans die to preserve a fantasy that Al Queda "is on the run". If it came out that he bungled it, and tried to cover it up. I don't think half of the country, the lemmocrats, would change their opinion. But a lot of undecideds with more ethics than your average alley cat would.
It obviously makes no difference to you that your president lied to you, unless of course he was a republican. Me, I don't care what party hat or skin color he was wearing in Vegas, a liar is just that, A LIAR.

It is terrible that 4 died in another terrorist attack, no doubt. But a bigger travesty is the attempt to stir this up in a way to score some political points to mar our president pre and post election.

Jimbo, the issue isnt about what Obama called it or if they covered up that it was terrorism or not, the issue is they knew it was a terrorist attack from the start and did nothing to help or support the people who were under attack, even after they begged for help. So to answer your question, they lied because it sounds worse to say you didnt help those in need who were being attacked by terrorists, who most would assume Obama had a duty to kill, than it would sound to say it was a protest and so they couldnt just go in and slaughter a bunch of protesters who were angry over an american made video.

But that is not what happened. We all know there are terrorists, and we know we are hated in some parts of the world. That isn't unique to Obama's watch. Did you expect Obama to put on his super hero tights and cape and fly over there like some kind of superhero? The logic is flimsy at best and deceptive at worst to think this is some kind of cover up.

No, the "entire world's intelligence community" did not say there were WMD. What they said was that they didn't know, and would therefore trust that the US intelligence agencies had it right. Out of respect for our side, they went along with the UN resolutions. The French public was saying to themselves that "they (the US) must know things that we don't." As it turned out, their trust and ours was vastly misplaced.

Tousand of churches in the ME. Try to enter some middle east countries like Saudi Arabia with the Bible in your hand. we will see who saves you. There are churches in Egypt, Syria etc. because these counties had rich Christian past. But look at the condition of christians there now. There bombings in chrches in Egypt and Syria. As for human rights, Turkey had a Christian past, os there is still some element of moderation in there blood.

If those countries you mentioned had Christian backgrounds and now they are a Muslim majority country and there are thousands of churches, what does that tell you? Comprehend. Why don't we give peace a chance? If there is too much hate and no possibilities to dialogue and produce something productive, what other better solutions can be there? The question that I always ask myself always is that, if some people say negative and derogatory things towards others, would there be a chance for the other party to listen to whats being said? There are bad people in every society, if the good ones couldn't communicate well, how could we solve the problems? so lets give peace a chance!

Gee... please read a book or two. There are thousands of churches in the Middle East. As for those who say what about Saudi Arabia. Well, so what? Saudi Arabia is 100% Muslim and just like the Vatican, they have a right not to build a place of worship for anothet Religion. Might I also remind you that when Spain kicked out the Muslims and Jews, well, the Jews were welcomed in Muslim countries. That is why you will find Jews in ALL Muslim countries in the Middle East. By the way, Muslims never invaded America and it was not until the English with the help of the UN and USA, illegally created Israel out of palestinian land that all the problems began. That is a fact.

Saudi Arabia is 100% Moslem because the thriving Jewish communities that existed at the time of Mohammed were
destroyed by Mohammed. ALL the synagogues were destroyed in Saudi Arabia unlike in Israel where mosques and churches can still thrive.

If there is a god, whey did he let these three people be murdered? And sorry, 'he/she works in mysterious ways' is not an acceptable answer.

And why did he allow Hitler to Gas 6,000,000 jews, or Stalin to murder 10,000,000, or the murder of his only begotten son. I'm afraid your going to have to do some research if you really want the answer to your question.

The world needs a lot more Muslims like El-Messidi.
I agree there is a silent majority...a massive majority. There are relatively few extreme Muslims but they win a lot of media attention for their outrageous and violent actions. They sour the worldview of Muslims.
So why don't we have more El-Messidis? Why is there not a core group of peaceful and wise Muslim leaders who will serve in this role? Please, please....the world is waiting.

      Unfortunately they arent as newsworthy.
If you were a news organization and you had a choice between a group saying give us peace or a group blowing things up and screaming for death, which would you put on your news site to try to grab readers?
You notice that even this story isnt properly classified as news.

oh, but there are so many like El-Messidi, but as you so truthfully said yourself, "there are relatively few extreme Muslims but they win a lot of media attention for their outrageous and violent actions."

If only the numerous actions, incomparably high to that of the extremists, were captured and displayed like this story.

Well, I shall still try :)

I'm not actually looking for a particular news story about peace. I'm looking for LEADERSHIP among Muslims that garners high profile attention. Who do we look to for moderation? Who is the SPOKESPERSON who can lead and be the voice of reason? This isn't about a single story or whether the media like to cover peace, it's about findign the Dr. King or Ghandi who can inspire the world around the issue of anti-extremism in his or her religion.
