In Gaza, fish with a side of politics

By Emma Lacey-Bordeaux, CNN

(CNN) - Ahmed Ferwana has a cookout coming up, one that's been years in the making. The English teacher, and CNN iReporter, in Gaza City is excited because his friends will be cooking a fish they haven't been able to buy in years.

[1:12] "When you eat it you feel like it's really rich."

Ferwana says the taste of this fish when cooked on the grill with spices is indescribable. He added that this fish, its name is translated as locus, is also a favorite because it has fewer bones than others.

  • Tomorrow Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will go before the UN to seek observer status for the Palestinian Territory. Countries like France, Norway, Spain, and China say they will support the measure while the United States and Germany will likely oppose it.  Dr. Hanan Ashraw, with the Palestinian Liberation Organization,  says statehood would be a historic turning point:

"For the world to begin to work to rectify a grave historical injustice that the Palestinians have undergone beginning with the creation of the state of Israel in 1948." FULL POST

(CNN) - One house at a time. That’s the only way for insurance adjusters to assess the damage from Superstorm Sandy.

With over 300,000 homes damaged or destroyed in New York alone, the work will take many months, maybe a year.

[:40] “The hard part is you want to get everybody like today. You want to make sure that everybody gets taken care of as soon as possible. You want to be there to just let them talk to you,” said Larry Steika, a member of Allstate’s disaster response team.

On this day, Steika was inside John Kelly’s home in Breezy Point, a beach front community in New York City hit hard by the storm. Kelly has already started making repairs, but he needs a check from Allstate to complete the major work.

  • Mexico's president-elect had a brief meeting with President Obama Tuesday at the White House.  He doesn't officially take office until Saturday, but Enrique Pena Nieto is setting his agenda, which includes much more than the war on drugs.  Christopher Wilson with the Mexico Institute at the Wilson Center says this is the perfect time to move the U.S-Mexico relationship beyond the violence:

"It is important to note that violence is down a little bit and stabilized sort of over the last year and has now fallen in 2012." FULL POST

  • We hear so much about the approaching "fiscal cliff" and whether Congress will work out a deal to avoid it or allow the economy to hurdle over it.  But, what does it all come down to and is it, at its core, about a war of words?  There are essentially only two ways to avoid higher taxes for everyone and drastic cuts in government spending.  Democrats want to raise taxes, while Republicans want to close loopholes.  However, one man's loophole is another man's tax increase.   CNN's Libby Lewis went looking for some answers.  She talked with Howard Gleckman, with the Tax Policy Center who says:

"Government spending programs are programs that benefit other people and not us and tax loopholes are exactly the same thing. That's the tax break some other guy gets, but not what I get." FULL POST
