(CNN) – Welcome to CNN Radio News Day.
- In Newtown, Connecticut a week after a gunman killed 27 people, mourners ignored the rain and gathered at a makeshift memorial. They filed in to see a growing tribute – Teddy bears, balloons, flowers and hand-made signs. A moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. began with the ringing of church bells. The National Rifle Association has been quiet since the shooting, but today the group broke its silence. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, argued it's possible 26 lives might have been saved if there had been armed guards at Sandy Hook Elementary School:
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
- Eleven days to go before the U.S. hits the so-called fiscal cliff. Last night the House failed to pass a proposal by their own leader. Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" failed to get enough votes to even reach a vote. The bill would have kept tax cuts in place for all except those Americans making more than a million dollars a year. Pundits are calling it a huge political embarrassment for the speaker but Boehner says – not so:
"... while we may have not been able to get the votes last night, they weren't taking that out on me. They, they were dealing with the perception that somebody might accuse them of raising taxes."
- With Christmas just around the corner you may have found that you've already spent more money than you planned. If that's true it might be because you bought things for yourself, too. Emma Firth walked out of a Macy's department store in New York with several bags in hand:
"The deals are quite... enticing. Yes. I've just gone in and bought something I probably wouldn't have bought 'cause the deal was so good."
