Red states and guns

(CNN) - The school shooting in Newtown has put guns on the front burner in some states, as well as with President Obama.

New York and Maryland may have grabbed recent headlines for taking a tough stance on guns, but they’re heavily Democratic states.

To catch an iPhone thief

(CNN) - If it wasn't for stolen iPhones, overall crime in New York City for 2012 would have been down according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Last year in New York, 3,890 Apple products were stolen.

A lot of those iPhones and iPads might be sold outside of the United States, according to MIT Technology Review Editor Will Knight:

[4:05] "There's a big black market for these phones, particularly in China, Africa, South America.  The used devices can often sell for a lot less than the new ones so there's a lot of demand."

And one phone that won't be part of the stolen iPhone statistics, belongs to Steve's wife (he chose to not use his last name or his wife's first name). FULL POST

(CNN) – Welcome to CNN Radio News Day.

  • In his inaugural address Monday, President Obama alluded to gun control. That follows his proposal of packages last week to try and curb gun violence. And this month, bills to place a ban on assault weapons are expected in the House and Senate. Some states aren't waiting on Washington – two already took steps at gun control. But New York and Maryland are heavily Democratic. Gun restrictions are a tougher sell in states controlled by Republican legislatures, like Virginia. Bruce Jackson is on the board of directors of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. He says people need to remember gun owners cut across a wide range of backgrounds:

"A lot of people think when you go to a gun show, all you're gonna see is mouth-breathing, camo-wearing, red-necked, fat, old, white guys driving pickup trucks. And that's not true. Basically, it's a big swath of humanity."        FULL POST
