(CNN) - Welcome to the CNN Soundwaves Sunday Playlist, a swing through the stories and podcasts that we're listening to.

The northern half of Mali, under control of al Qaeda-linked jihadists, has become a battle zone.

This week, French and Malian troops went to war there to prevent Islamist militants from advancing further south. They hope to ease the threat to the rest of Mali, one of West Africa's more stable nations.

It's an important conflict that has yet to make it onto the world's radar in a major way. Here's some of our favorite reporting on the conflict there, produced by other outlets.

  • First, let's start with how we got here. Public Radio Fresh Air has this comprehensive briefing on Mali's troubles with Adam Nossiter, the New York Times's West Africa bureau chief. The headline says it all: Northern Mali: A Violent Islamist Stronghold.

Sunday Playlist: New Year's Resolve

By Pat St. Claire, CNN

(CNN) – Welcome to the Sunday Playlist, sounds and stories we've discovered from other audio producers and that we want to share with our listeners.

As another year draws to a close we start thinking about what the New Year will hold. In this edition of the Sunday Playlist, a few suggestions from around the Web to help you not only make some new resolutions, but hopefully to help you keep them.

  • The Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley suggests making new year's resolutions can be a fun and useful family affair. In its Happiness Matters Podcast sociologist Christine Carter and R.N. Rona Renna offer advice for helping your kids make resolutions that they can keep. They even provide a fun "habit tracker" tool you can download to help your children keep up with how well they're doing.

(CNN) - Welcome to the Sunday Playlist, sounds and stories we've discovered from other audio producers and that we want to share with our listeners.

This week's Sunday Playlist, the best Christmas and Hanukkah stories from around the web.

But first, a look back at some of the more thoughtful pieces centered on last week's horrific shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The killings tore an emotional gash through the nation's psyche, and sparked new conversations on issues like gun control and mental health.

Here are a few selections that rise above the rhetoric, and get you thinking about our humanity, our culture, and the way we're wired:

Sunday Playlist: Guns, Christmas and California Accents

By Susanna Capelouto, CNN

(CNN) Welcome to the Sunday playlist, where we present a selection of sounds and stories we listen to.

  • Of course the senseless killings in Newtown, Connecticut have dominated our world these past two days.  That's why we want to share this short clip from "Marketplace" where host Kai Ryssdal realizes that there are more places in the U.S. to buy guns than there are Starbucks in the world.  It was the  final note  of his Friday program.  That will also be the final note for this post on the subject.
  • Let's not forget, this is the holiday season and Deutsche Welle English has this wonderful story about Christmas in Japan.  It is a unique perspective from a country where only a half of one percent of people are Christian.  Christmas in Japan is mostly about romantic images, much like Valentines.  Listen for the Christmas carols sung in Japanese.
  • And finally, this month  KQED in Northern California teamed up with Stanford University to find a California accent.  Listeners called in to talk about what they think a California accent sounds like.

We hope you take a listen to our selections.
