(CNN) -"I know what you’re thinking," Clint Eastwood told the crowd at the GOP convention.
[:10] "You are thinking, what's a movie tradesman doing out here? You know they are all left wingers out there, left of Lenin."
But he’s not. Jon Voight’s not. Chuck Norris either.
They’re the other side of Hollywood. The Hollywood Right.
And film historian Steven J. Ross says that even though Hollywood liberals get the headlines, Hollywood conservatives have had more of an impact on the body politic – building the Republican Party and putting conservatives into office.
Ross, who wrote a book on Hollywood’s right and left, says a big reason conservatives have been able to use Hollywood effectively is simple.
[3:52] "Conservatives have a better story line than liberals. From Louis B. Mayer to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Hollywood right has told a simple but compelling story: America is the greatest nation in the world. What more do you need to know?"
Ross says President Barack Obama had a Hollywood storyline in 2008 – with a single phrase: "Hope and change you can believe in."
But then, Ross says,
[2:10] "Then he lost his way."
The historian says Obama should take a cue from the master, Ronald Reagan.
The man who used a single phrase to wipe out a lot of dark clouds to get reelected: "It’s Morning in America."
