  • A military operation to free a group of Westerners being held captive in a remote gas field in Algeria, is over.  Algeria's official news agency reports the country's military was able to free a "large number" of hostages but that there are causalities.  The man thought to be behind the attack is named Moktar Belmoktar.  CNN Executive Editor Tim Lister says the veteran jihadist is also renowned for hostage-taking and smuggling:

Parents of gun victims share goals, not tactics

(CNN) - Annette Holt and Elliot Fineman are two very different people connected by grief.

Holt lost her teenage son to gun violence on a Chicago public transit bus. Fineman’s son was killed while dining in a restaurant in San Diego.

Both have dedicated their lives to reducing gun violence and advocating for tougher gun laws. But their approaches are as different as their backgrounds.
