(CNN) - Welcome to the CNN Soundwaves Sunday Playlist, a swing through the stories and podcasts that we're listening to.

The northern half of Mali, under control of al Qaeda-linked jihadists, has become a battle zone.

This week, French and Malian troops went to war there to prevent Islamist militants from advancing further south. They hope to ease the threat to the rest of Mali, one of West Africa's more stable nations.

It's an important conflict that has yet to make it onto the world's radar in a major way. Here's some of our favorite reporting on the conflict there, produced by other outlets.

  • First, let's start with how we got here. Public Radio Fresh Air has this comprehensive briefing on Mali's troubles with Adam Nossiter, the New York Times's West Africa bureau chief. The headline says it all: Northern Mali: A Violent Islamist Stronghold.

  • The search is on for a new pastor to deliver the benediction at President Obama's inauguration in about a week. It's because of Rev. Louie Giglio's decision yesterday to step-aside in the wake of a 1990's sermon he gave on homosexuality – calling it a sin. Giglio said he's withdrawing to remove any distraction from the inauguration. There's been fallout and questions. CNN Belief Blog editor Eric Marrapodi says that includes for the President's administration:

"It leaves a lot of people scratching their heads in religious communities as where do they fit in the tent, if it's supposed to be all about inclusion."   FULL POST

Capitol Hill (CNN) – It’s not just quiet at the U.S. Capitol this week, it is nearly silent. Both the House and Senate are gone. And the House plans to be in session just six more days for the rest of the month, including the Presidential Inauguration ceremony on January 21st.

Mickey Edwards, former congressman, R-OK, and co-founder of No Labels:

[:58] “The way it's done now, you're never in Washington consecutively for more then two to three days. It's hard to get work done.”

(CNN) - Last night I suspected my son had snuck onto my iPad and read "To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others," by this week's CNN Profiles guest, author Daniel Pink.

My son is in the 6th grade. He has been using the hard-sell technique on his pitch for his parents to buy him a new computer. It hasn't worked. Last night he changed gears as he was doing his homework on my wife's computer.

"The operating system on mom's computer is too old to operate the latest apps," he told me. Then he listed the best new educational apps he was unable to download on what, a few years ago, was a state of the art operating system.

That moved me a little towards his goal.

  • Gun violence and what to do about it take center stage today in a number of states, as many legislatures begin their sessions.  Following the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings, President Obama asked Vice President Biden to head a task force to find solutions to the problem of gun violence in America. Biden's recommendations are due next Tuesday. He's met with many of the stakeholders, including pro-gun groups and major firearm retailers. Now, Bill Pound, executive director of the National Conference of State Legislatures, says states are altering their legislative agendas:

"The gun issue will be prominent in a lot of states.  Whether there will be action taken on it is another question." FULL POST
