  • The city of Boston has been under siege all day. Authorities put surrounding communities and neighborhoods on lockdown, telling residents to stay inside. In some parts of town police were going door-to-door looking for Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Law enforcement officials say Tsarnaev escaped an overnight shootout with police that left his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the other man wanted in the bombings, dead. CNN's Barbara Starr reports investigators are combing through everything – photos, intel reports, phone records – to learn more about the suspects:

"They are indeed looking to see if these two men had any connections to overseas groups, frankly to overseas, terrorism. No conclusion about that yet. We want to emphasize that very strongly." FULL POST

  • Secretary of State John Kerry visited Seoul today to try to ease some of the tension that's been building in the Korean Peninsula. Kerry met with South Korea's president and military leaders in charge of 28,000 U.S. troops stationed in the country's capital. He said the U.S. will hold off on a number of military exercises, and is lowering its rhetoric. CNN's Anna Coren in Seoul, says Kerry's comments could be seen as an olive branch:

"He did seem to open the door for diplomacy.  Basically the United States will talk to North Korea if it's serious about de-nuclearization." FULL POST

  • Today the Senate decided that a bill to expand background checks on firearms will hit the floor for debate. The vote broke an attempt by some Republican senators to filibuster. All of it was procedural but important – a sign that the nation's lawmakers will at least consider gun control measures. Still, this is the first tiny step in a long, hard climb for gun control advocates. Dan Baum, author of the book 'Gun Guys', is a self-described liberal but also a gun enthusiast. He's frustrated at how the gun conversation is panning-out:

"The post-Sandy Hook wave of anti-gun sentiment and the impulse to ban guns, I actually think has made us less safe." FULL POST

  • A Republican and a Democrat who both support gun rights announced today that they'd reached a compromise deal on the controversial issue of background checks. Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin say if their plan becomes law it would expand background checks for firearms sold on the internet and at gun shows. After the news conferene, Manchin was asked how he thought Newtown familes would respond:

"I would hope they would look at the positive things and the positive steps we’ve taken to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people – I really would."

  • Yesterday President Obama met with the families of the Newtown shooting victims in Connecticut. Today he brought 12 of them to back Washington. He's hoping to sway 14 Republican senators who have signed a letter promising to filibuster any gun control measures that could hit the Senate floor this week.  Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut:

"It is insulting to the families of Sandy Hook, Connecticut who have gone through this tragedy to not even get a vote on the floor of the United States Senate on a gun violence package that 90 percent of Americans support. What's become of this democracy?" FULL POST
